How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photo Session in Jacksonville, FL
The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the best Newborn Photographer in Jacksonville, FL
More about me
I'm Rebecca! Fine Art Jacksonville maternity and newborn photographer, wife & mother of three, lover of pastries, and coffee shop fanatic. I'm so glad you found me!
If you’ve just moved to Jacksonville’s Ortega and Avondale neighborhoods, you already know how special this area feels. Tree-lined streets, river breezes, walkable pockets of shops, and plenty of places where families can slow down and actually enjoy being out together.
This guide brings together some of the best coffee shops, playgrounds, parks, and restaurants that are genuinely family-friendly and easy to fit into your day (whether you’ve got toddlers in strollers or older kids who need to burn energy).
Southern Grounds is one of the most family-friendly coffee shops in Avondale, offering a large, open seating layout that makes it easy for families with kids or strollers. The menu includes coffee, breakfast, brunch, and lunch options, along with pastries and grab-and-go items.
It is especially convenient for families who want a sit-down space that still feels casual. The size of the café also makes it easier to find seating compared to smaller coffee shops in the area.
Best for: brunch with kids, meeting friends, relaxed mornings
Social House Coffee is a smaller neighborhood café known for its high-quality espresso drinks and relaxed atmosphere. While seating is more limited, the outdoor space and calm environment make it a good stop for a quieter coffee break.
Parents often appreciate it as a quick stop while walking with kids or running errands in Avondale.
Best for: quick coffee stops, stroller walks, low-key mornings
Steady Coffee offers a bright, modern café experience with a strong focus on quality coffee and friendly service. The seating is compact but welcoming, and it has a neighborhood feel that works well for short visits with kids. One of my good friends is a barista there and we love to go visit her on her working days!
It is a strong option for families who want a quick caffeine stop without the overwhelm of a large café.
Best for: grab-and-go coffee, short visits, casual meetups
This one is what I consider to be a hidden gem & not necessarily in Avondale or Ortega but close enough! Although I think most locals know about it. It’s not officially a public park, but the church has set up such an intimate and well thought out playground for kids of multipole ages. There are picnic benches, a toddler playset, a larger playset, a porch style swing for teens & adults, and a full swingset.
We love going here for a picnic and to play because, although it’s located in a dense area, it’s so quiet and peaceful and plenty of room for the kids to roam. Plus it’s within walking distance to Bold Bean, another local favorite coffee spot in Riverside.
Best for: playground time, shaded outdoor play, picnics
Willowbranch Park is one of the most versatile green spaces in the area, offering shaded walking paths, a playground, basketball courts, and creekside scenery. It is a true neighborhood park where families can stay for longer stretches of time. An added bonus is you can attend storytime at the Willowbranch Library on Thursdays at 11 right after running all the wiggles out at the park!
The combination of open green space and play areas makes it one of the best all-around parks for kids in Avondale.
Best for: playground time, walking paths, shaded outdoor play
The Bunny Hive is a thoughtfully designed indoor play and enrichment space for babies and young children, offering a calm, aesthetically elevated environment for both play and connection. Unlike traditional play places, it focuses on intentional activities such as sensory play, music classes, story time, and caregiver-child bonding experiences in a beautifully curated setting.
It’s especially well-suited for infants through preschool-aged children, making it a favorite for parents looking for a clean, safe, and engaging space during hot, rainy, or unpredictable Florida weather. The atmosphere feels more like a modern studio than a typical play center, with soft play areas and structured programming that encourages development through play.
Best for: babies, toddlers, sensory play, parent-child classes, indoor play dates in Avondale
In addition to being a coffee shop, Southern Grounds is also one of the most practical family dining options in Avondale. The menu includes breakfast, brunch, and lunch items that work well for both adults and children, and the spacious seating makes it easier for families to dine comfortably. You can’t beat that it’s within walking distance of Boone Park either!
The Brick is a long-standing Avondale restaurant offering American-style dishes in a relaxed, neighborhood setting. The menu is broad enough for both adults and kids, with options like sandwiches, salads, and comfort food classics.
Outdoor seating and a casual atmosphere make it a strong choice for early dinners with families.
Best for: casual dinners, family brunch, outdoor seating
Mellow Mushroom is one of the most family-friendly restaurants in the area, especially for pizza nights. The environment is casual, colorful, and welcoming to children, with a menu that accommodates a wide range of dietary preferences.
It is a reliable option for families who want a stress-free dinner where everyone can find something they like.
Best for: pizza nights, kids’ meals, group dining
Mestizo Mexican Cocina offers a bright, modern take on Mexican food with tacos, fajitas, and kid-friendly menu options. The restaurant includes indoor and patio seating, making it a flexible choice for families.
It works well for casual dinners when you want something quick but still sit-down.
Best for: family dinners, tacos, patio seating
This isn't an investment in vanity. This is an investment in your legacy - what gets passed down to future generations. Maybe even to those you never get a chance to meet.
