Fall family photos are some of my favorites. There’s something about the cozy layers, earthy tones, and softer light that makes this season feel especially beautiful.
But if you’ve booked a family session, there’s one question that usually comes up pretty quickly:
“What are we all going to wear?”
The good news? Your outfits don’t need to be perfectly coordinated, and everyone definitely doesn’t need to wear the same color.
The goal is to choose outfits that feel like your family while creating a beautiful, cohesive look in your photos. Here are a few of my favorite tips for getting started.

Instead of trying to plan everyone’s outfit at the same time, choose one outfit as your starting point. That’s typically mom’s.
Maybe it’s your daughter’s floral dress, your favorite sweater, or a pair of pants you already know you feel great in.
Once you have that first outfit, pull colors and textures from it for everyone else.
This makes coordinating much easier than trying to find five completely matching outfits.
One of the easiest ways to make family photos feel natural is to choose colors that complement one another without being identical.
For fall, think about warm, earthy tones like:
You don’t have to use all of these. In fact, choosing a few colors and repeating them throughout everyone’s outfits usually creates the most natural look.
For example, one person might wear a rust-colored dress while someone else has a subtle rust pattern in their shirt. Another family member could wear cream, while someone else wears tan or olive.
Everything feels connected without looking like a uniform.

Fall is the perfect season for adding texture to your family’s outfits.
Think sweaters, cardigans, denim, linen, corduroy, boots, scarves, knit dresses, and cozy layers.
Textures add visual interest to your images and can make even simple outfits feel thoughtfully styled.
And bonus: layers can be especially helpful if the weather changes throughout your session!
This one is important, especially when little ones are involved.
If your child hates what they’re wearing, they’re probably not going to magically become happier because there’s a camera nearby.
Choose clothing that allows them to move, play, run, and snuggle.
Family photos don’t have to mean standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera. Some of my favorite images happen when families are walking, playing, laughing, or simply enjoying one another.
Comfort makes room for those moments.
Think about where your session is taking place when choosing your outfits.
A cozy outdoor field might call for warm neutrals, boots, and layers. A beach session may look better with lighter fabrics and softer colors. A wooded location might pair beautifully with earthy tones and textured fabrics.
Your outfits should complement the environment rather than compete with it. For example — if you’re photogrphing in a park with lots of brown and green and orange trees, wearing brown will probably not be the best idea. Or if you do have a brown dress you adore, lighten it up with everyone else’s outfits and some nude booties!

Neutrals photograph beautifully and tend to keep the focus where it belongs: on your family.
Cream, beige, tan, brown, denim, soft gray, and muted colors can create a timeless look that won’t feel dated when you look back at your photos years from now.
And if you love color, absolutely use it! Just consider choosing muted or earthy versions rather than having everyone wear a bold, saturated color.
There was a time when everyone wore jeans and the exact same white shirt for family photos.
You don’t have to do that anymore. 😉
Instead, aim for a collection of outfits that feel like they belong together.
Mix colors, patterns, and textures while keeping the overall palette cohesive.
And don’t worry if everything isn’t perfectly coordinated. A little variation is what makes your family look like your family.
This might be the most important tip of all.
When you look at your family photos ten years from now, you probably won’t remember whether everyone’s outfits matched perfectly.
You’ll remember how little your children were.
You’ll remember their personalities.
You’ll remember the way your youngest held your hand or the way your kids laughed together.
So choose clothing that lets your family be comfortable, connected, and completely yourselves.
If you’re still feeling stuck, here’s an easy formula to try:
One statement outfit + two or three coordinating neutrals + a few layers and textures.
For example:
Mom: Flowy rust or floral dress
Dad: Neutral button-down + khaki or dark denim
Child: Cream sweater + jeans
Baby: Soft neutral romper with a coordinating layer
Nothing is identical, but everything works together.

Choosing outfits for the whole family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.
If you’re unsure about colors, patterns, or whether something will photograph well, I’m always happy to help you think through your wardrobe before your session.
My goal isn’t to create a family that looks perfectly styled.
It’s to create images that feel like you—connected, genuine, and full of the little moments you’ll want to remember.
Because years from now, the most important thing won’t be what everyone was wearing.
It will be that you were all there, together, in that season of your family’s life.
And that’s worth documenting ♡
