If you are pregnant and starting to think about newborn photos, this is usually one of the first questions that comes up.
When should I book my newborn photos
The short answer is the best time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester or early third trimester. The longer answer is that timing matters more than most people realize, especially if you want those sleepy, simple, timeless images that feel soft and natural.
I want to walk you through how this works, what I recommend to families, and how to make sure you do not miss the window for the kind of newborn photos you are imagining.

Newborn sessions are different from other types of photography because the window is very small.
Those early days move quickly. Babies are sleepier, curl up naturally, and are still adjusting to life outside the womb. This is when we are able to gently pose them, capture those tiny details, and create those calm, connected images that most parents are drawn to.
Once baby gets a little older, they start stretching out more, staying awake longer, and becoming more alert to their surroundings. That is still beautiful, but it creates a very different type of session.
This is why booking early is important. It is not about rushing you. It is about making sure I can reserve space for you during that short window.
For families here in Jacksonville and surrounding areas, I recommend booking your newborn session anytime between 20 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
Here is why that range works so well:
Booking in the second trimester means you are not scrambling at the end of pregnancy, when energy is lower and life feels more unpredictable.
Booking before baby arrives also guarantees I can hold a spot around your due date, since newborn sessions are scheduled based on when baby actually comes.

This part confuses a lot of people, so let me make it simple.
When you book your newborn session, we do not pick a hard date on the calendar.
Instead, I reserve space around your due date.
Once your baby is born, you reach out and we schedule your session within the ideal window, usually within the first two weeks of life.
This flexibility is important because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected. This system ensures you are not stressed about “missing your spot” if baby comes early or late.
Sometimes life moves faster than expected and you realize after baby arrives that you never got around to booking newborn photos. This is more common than you think, especially in those early weeks when you are adjusting to everything new.
If that’s where you are, you’re not too late.
I offer lifestyle newborn sessions for families with babies between 6 weeks and 12 weeks old. These sessions are slower, more relaxed, and centered around connection in your home. Baby is more alert at this stage, which means we capture more eye contact, stretches, snuggles, and those in between moments that still feel so fleeting.
It’s a different experience than those very early sleepy newborn images, but it’s just as meaningful in its own way.
If you’re in this stage and wondering what that might look like, I have some helpful info here that walks through exactly what a lifestyle newborn session includes and how to prepare.

Newborn sessions are not rushed sessions. They require time, patience, and flexibility for feeding, soothing, and breaks.
As a Jacksonville newborn photographer, I intentionally limit how many newborn sessions I take each month so I can give each family a calm experience instead of a rushed one.
This is especially important for first time parents who are healing, adjusting, and learning their baby at the same time.
If you’re in your third trimester or even already close to your due date, it’s still worth reaching out.
I always try to fit in last minute inquiries when I can. I also work with an amazing team of associates who take over for me when I’m not available. You’re guaranteed the same lovely experience with the added flexibility of scheduling last minute.
If you take nothing else from this, let it be this.
The best time to book your newborn photos is well before your baby arrives.
Not because it’s strict or complicated, but because it protects your experience and ensures you do not miss the short window where those early images are possible.
If you’re expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Jacksonville Florida, I would love to talk with you early in your pregnancy so we can plan everything in a way that feels calm and simple.
You do not need to have anything figured out. You just need a due date and a little bit of excitement for what’s coming next!
This isn't an investment in vanity. This is an investment in your legacy - what gets passed down to future generations. Maybe even to those you never get a chance to meet.
