What to Wear for Your Maternity, Newborn & Family Photos in Jacksonville, FL
You’ve booked your photography session, you’re dreaming of beautiful photos to hang on your walls, and then comes the question almost every mom asks:
“What on earth are we going to wear?”
As a Jacksonville maternity, newborn, and family photographer, one of the most common questions I receive before a session is what everyone should wear.
And while I truly believe the most beautiful photographs are about connection, not clothing, the outfits you choose can make a surprisingly big difference in how your final gallery looks and feels.
If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet wondering how to coordinate outfits for your entire family without looking too matchy-matchy, you’re definitely not alone!
The good news? You don’t need an entirely new wardrobe or perfectly coordinated outfits to achieve that timeless, effortless look.
Here are a few of my favorite tips!
If there’s one piece of advice I could give every family before their session, it’s this: Choose mom’s outfit first.
Whether you’re celebrating your pregnancy, snuggling your brand-new baby, or updating your family portraits, I always recommend starting with something that makes mom feel beautiful.
Flowy dresses are one of my absolute favorite options. They photograph beautifully, create natural movement, and add a softness to your images that feels effortlessly romantic.
Look for pieces with delicate floral prints, subtle textures, feminine sleeves, or soft, flowing fabrics.
Once you’ve chosen your outfit, you can build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around its colors.
And remember, you don’t have to wear a dress! The goal is to feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.
Gone are the days when everyone needed to wear matching white shirts and jeans!
Instead, I recommend choosing a soft, complementary color palette that allows everyone’s outfits to work together without looking identical.
Some of my favorite colors for maternity, newborn, and family photography include:
These colors work especially beautifully with the natural greenery, oak trees, and warm sunlight we have here in Jacksonville, Florida.
My favorite trick: Choose two or three main colors, then incorporate different shades and textures throughout everyone’s outfits.
The result is a beautifully cohesive look that still feels natural.

I absolutely love a beautiful floral dress.
Delicate patterns can add so much personality and visual interest to your photos, especially when they’re paired with simpler pieces.
The key is balance.
If mom is wearing a floral dress, consider dressing dad in a solid linen button-down and the children in coordinating neutral tones.
Try to avoid having multiple family members wear competing patterns, especially bold stripes, large graphics, or busy prints.
You want your outfits to complement one another, not compete for attention.
One of the easiest ways to make simple outfits look more elevated is to incorporate texture.
Think linen dresses, soft cotton, delicate embroidery, cable-knit sweaters, or a sweet pair of baby overalls.
These little details add depth to your photographs without distracting from the people in them.
For newborn sessions especially, I love the combination of soft whites, cozy knits, and natural fabrics.
There’s something so beautiful about the simplicity of a mama holding her brand-new baby in a flowing white dress.
It never goes out of style.
Maternity sessions are such a special opportunity to celebrate this fleeting season of motherhood.
When choosing your maternity outfit, I recommend looking for something that highlights your growing belly while allowing you to move comfortably.
Flowing maxi dresses, empire waists, and soft fabrics are wonderful choices.
For outdoor maternity photography in Jacksonville, I especially love romantic dresses in ivory, soft blue, blush, or muted floral prints.
These colors photograph beautifully against our lush Florida greenery and golden evening light.
And if you’re bringing your husband or little ones along, keep their outfits simple so the focus remains on you and your beautiful growing family.
For newborn photography, simplicity really is everything.
Your baby is already the sweetest little focal point, so there’s no need for elaborate outfits or accessories.
For moms, I love soft dresses, relaxed linen pieces, and neutral colors that photograph beautifully in the natural light of your home.
For dads, a simple neutral button-down, knit polo, or solid shirt paired with chinos is perfect.
Older siblings look adorable in soft cotton dresses, knit rompers, or neutral separates.
And for baby? A simple white onesie, a soft swaddle, or even just their tiny little newborn details can make for the most beautiful photographs.
One important thing to remember: You don’t need a perfectly decorated home or a picture-perfect wardrobe for meaningful newborn photos.
The beauty is in the connection, the tiny fingers, the sleepy snuggles, and the way your family loves on your newest little addition.
While I always encourage families to wear what feels authentic to them, there are a few things I generally recommend avoiding.
Bright neon colors can reflect unwanted color onto skin. Large logos and graphics tend to pull attention away from faces. Extremely busy patterns can make an image feel visually cluttered.
I also recommend avoiding outfits that need constant adjusting or feel uncomfortable.
If you’re worried about your dress slipping, your child’s shirt riding up, or shoes that hurt your feet, it’s going to be much harder to relax and enjoy your session.
And trust me, the most beautiful photos happen when you’re comfortable enough to forget about the camera.
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t to look like you’ve stepped out of a clothing catalog.
It’s to create photographs that feel like you.
The way your toddler reaches for your hand. The way your baby curls into your chest. The way your husband looks at you when you’re holding your newest little love.
Those are the moments you’ll treasure years from now.
Choosing beautiful, coordinating outfits simply helps keep the focus where it belongs: on the people you love most.
